The massive star IMF

چکیده

We review our current knowledge on the IMF in nearby environments, massive star forming regions, super star clusters, starbursts and alike objects from studies of integrated light, and discuss the various techniques used to constrain the IMF. In most cases, including UV-optical studies of stellar features and optical-IR analysis of nebular emission, the data is found to be compatible with a “universal” Salpeter-like IMF with a high upper mass cut-off over a large metallicity range. In contrast, near-IR observations of nuclear starbursts and LIRG show indications of a lower Mup and/or a steeper IMF slope, for which no alternate explanation has yet been found. Also, dynamical mass measurements of seven super star clusters provide so far no simple picture of the IMF. Finally we present recent results of a direct stellar probe of the upper end of the IMF in metal-rich H ii regions, showing no deficiency of massive stars at high metallicity, and determining a lower limit on Mup of ∼> 60–90 M⊙.

IMF variations and their implications for Supernovae numbers

The stellar initial mass function (IMF) integrated over an entire galaxy is an integral over all separate star-formation events. Since most stars form in star clusters with different masses the integrated IMF becomes an integral of the (universal or invariant) canonical stellar IMF over the star-cluster mass function. This integrated IMF is steeper (contains fewer massive stars per Gtype star) ...

The initial mass function of stars: evidence for uniformity in variable systems.

The distribution of stellar masses that form in one star formation event in a given volume of space is called the initial mass function (IMF). The IMF has been estimated from low-mass brown dwarfs to very massive stars. Combining IMF estimates for different populations in which the stars can be observed individually unveils an extraordinary uniformity of the IMF. This general insight appears to...

Massive Stars: Their Birth Sites and Distribution

The stellar IMF has been found to be an invariant Salpeter power-law (α = 2.35) above about 1M⊙, but at the same time a massive star typically has more than one companion. This constrains the possible formation scenarios of massive stars, but also implies that the true, binary-star corrected stellar IMF could be significantly steeper than Salpeter, α > 2.7. A significant fraction of all OB star...

Super star clusters as probes of massive star evolution and the IMF at extreme metallicities

Young super star clusters and young compact massive star forming regions can provide useful information on their burst properties (age, burst duration, SFR), the upper end of the IMF and yield new constraints on the evolution of massive stars. Through the study of their stellar populations we can in particular extend our knowledge on massive stars to extreme metallicities unavailable for such s...

Evidence for a fundamental stellar upper mass limit from clustered star formation, and some implications therof

Theoretical considerations lead to the expectation that stars should not have masses larger than about mmax∗ = 60− 120M⊙, while the observational evidence has been ambiguous. Only very recently has a physical stellar mass limit near 150M⊙ emerged thanks to modern high-resolution observations of local star-burst clusters. But this limit does not appear to depend on metallicity, in contradiction ...
